Hi. I love Subtitle Edit, a great program.

I've used it for a few years now but I have noticed that since 3.5.9, the Auto Break function is not always accurate, especially when a group of small words are split.
I re-installed 3.5.8 and Auto Break works fine.
A small niggle perhaps, but I do like to use that function.

by at 19-04-11 16:56
@brhurrell: Could you give some examples of where auto break works badly?

by Xy at 19-04-11 23:11
Hello, Nikse. I am interesed in the matter too.
Here are some examples I've collected:

by at 19-05-11 16:32
@brhurrell/Xy: How is this beta version regarding auto-br?

Auto br is now more configurable, via Options -> Settings -> Tools
auto br settings

@Xy: thx for the useful file :)

by Xy at 19-06-11 10:46
Very good! Great improvement. Only 3 lines need little polishing: 12, 21 and 22.
That's 3 of total of 32 lines, less than 10%.

Great job, Nikse!

P.S. Does the "dont break after" list for Serbian language (latin) also works for Serbian Cyrillic?

If not, you can add it (as separate language) and use this list:

by at 19-07-11 08:25
@Xy: 12, 21 and 22 is broken correctly - at least after number of characters in each line.

by Xy at 19-07-11 10:20
Regarding the 3 lines, nothing changed from SE stable.
Here's how Subtitle Workshop 2.51 handles them:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder :)

by at 19-07-11 10:34
@Xy: So you want to split via "pixel width" and not characters?

by brhurrell at 19-07-11 14:55
Thanks nikse, but that beta link you kindly provided does not work for me.

by at 19-08-11 13:29
@Xy/brhurrell: Latest beta updated with an option to use "Pixel width" for auto break (enabled by default).

How does that work for you?

by Xy at 19-08-11 22:06
At this point I realise the matter is subjective,
and it can never be to everybody's liking...

What I would like to see is text as evenly broken
as possible.

For me, Beta 11 is better, because it handles lines
4, 5, 9, 10, 18, 19, 20, 26, 27 way better than Beta 54.
Beta 54 performed poorly there.

Beta 54 broke lines 3, 12, 21, 22, 28, 31 better.

Not sure about: 2, 6, 8, 11.

by at 19-09-11 07:01
@Xy: Yes, it's subjective. That's why all settings are in the UI now. As you don't like 4, 5, 9, 10, 18, 19, 20, 26, 27 then turn off "Break early for dialog dash" :)

Lines 2, 6, 8, 11 are surely broken correctly by length... but you prefer it "bottom heavy"?

by Xy at 19-09-11 09:39
Yes, "bottom heavy" in general.
In this case, lines 2, 11 more in favour of Beta 11,
and 6, 8 for Beta 54.

The four lines are ok either way.

by at 19-09-11 16:11
Beta updated to allow for "bottom heavy" when "Use pixel width" is enabled.
I think this enables everyone to configure SE auto br to their own preferences :)

by JJD at 19-09-11 16:31
BUG: In the Point Sync menu if we have negative time - can't make it in positive, can't just erase the - symbol. I give a positive time, and the program calculate something for it's own, not my time.

by at 19-09-11 19:11
@JJD: Seems to work here... could you explain in precise steps how to re-create this issue?

by brhurrell at 19-10-11 14:37
Thank you nikse, so far that works ok for me, although I personally prefer "Top Heavy".

by suncek at 19-11-11 20:29
more request - is possible to have something like profiles for setings? sometimes you need diferent setings for diferfent projects...

by at 19-11-11 21:28
@suncek: profiles was added in SE 3.5.10 :)

by tech at 19-12-11 04:41
would it be possible to integrate the code of videosubfinder into SE so that SE could do it all...its already pretty good at OCR

by JJD at 19-14-11 12:23
I'll send you subtitles at email. This subtitles is not a exception.

by Golfbilen at 19-20-11 04:20
Hi, thanks for a great program.
I noticed that the batch-convert does not remove empty rows and renumber the subtitle.
If I open a file with empty rows, go to tools-fix common errrors- and "tick" only the first option. "remove empty rows" and run it, then it works.
But when using the batch convert, ticking the "fix common errors" and in settings just select the "remove empty rows" it doesn't work.
Sorry if the name of the menu-selections are wrong, I don't use the english language so I tried to reverse-translate :)

It's a normal *.srt file.
a couple of lines are empty.
I want to correct that in all my files using batch to fix it.

Please let me know if you need a better explanation or if I am using the batch convert in a way it wasn't intended.

I tried to find the rows using regular expression ... I can't find them that way and I don't think it would be possible to remove the row-number and time stamp and then renumber the subtitle using gregexp so i gave up :)

by at 19-20-11 09:42
@tech: Sorry, still have no fast way of accessing each image.

@Golfbilen: Hm, it works for me... in latest stable version this does not work for "Multiple replace" but that is fixed in latest beta.
So I guess I need more info to be able to re-create this.

by Golfbilen at 19-20-11 14:18
Thank you.
I forgott the most important part, what version I was using....
I downloaded the beta and put all files where they were supposed to go and.... It works :)
Sorry to take up your time with a problem allready fixed. Never occured to me that when I pressed "check for updates" that it didn't download the beta. I thought I was on the latest version.
My bad, sorry, and thank you again [3

Google Translator Toolkit stopt on 4 dec 2019

by at 19-24-11 11:16
@Golfbilen: Cool, I'm glad it's working now :)

@mghc canton: Yes, that sucks... Google is really not the friendly IT company it used to be.

by Tarzi at 19-24-11 22:41
Dark skin/night mode would be great. Thanks for ur work.

by Xy at 19-25-11 13:40
@Tarzi, you read my mind. I was just about about to propose that ;)

by at 19-26-11 17:56
@Tarzi/Xy: You can edit SE's Settings.xml file - and set "UseDarkTheme" to "True".
It's not perfect, but it's mostly dark ;)

by Xy at 19-27-11 21:17
Feature proposal:

Would you consider adding a separate error colour for excessive CPS in "Syntax coloring", so we can distinguish it from too short and too long durations?

by at 19-28-11 09:45
@Xy: If you show the cps/sec column in the list view, you'll get this information (right-click on the column header to change visible columns):

by Francesco at 19-28-11 16:08
When will you add the feature for aligning the dialouge subtitles with left justification?

by Xy at 19-28-11 16:25
Ok, thanks.

Question: is there a option of numerical representation of total errors, like in Subtitle Workshop (Information and errors) :

by Tomi Lindroos at 19-29-11 10:23
i have video and subtilte text is empty. video:

by at 19-29-11 14:24
@Tomi Lindroos: Could you explain a bit more? Yes, the .srt file has not texts... you can open the .ts file in SE and OCR.

by Francesco at 19-10-12 16:21
With my previous comment i intended this feature
will it be available in future versions?

by at 19-10-12 17:09
@Francesco: It's available in the export to image-based-formats via the "Align" value "Center, left justify",
For .srt you'll need a video player supporting this.

by Makkeda at 19-30-12 20:18
you could create a .ss format with this code:
[Script Info]
Title: [title français]
Original Script: [unknown]
ScriptType: v4.00

[V4 Styles]
Format: Name, Fontname, Fontsize, PrimaryColour, SecondaryColour, TertiaryColour, BackColour, Bold, Italic, BorderStyle, Outline, Shadow, Alignment, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, AlphaLevel, Encoding
Style: Default,Tahoma,24,16777215,16777215,16777215,12632256,-1,0,1,1,1,6,30,30,415,0,0

Format: Marked, Start, End, Style, Name, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Effect, Text
Dialogue: Marked=0,0:00:09:91,0:00:13:40,Default,NTP,0000,0000,0000,!Effect,Aujourd’hui

Thank you very much

by Makkeda at 19-30-12 20:20
I'm sorry:
you could create .ssa format with this code:

by at 19-30-12 20:26
@Makkeda: SE already has support for the "Sub Station Alpha" format (.ssa)...

by Makkeda at 19-30-12 20:29
but with this structure:
[Script Info]
; This is a Sub Station Alpha v4 script.
Title: 1
ScriptType: v4.00
Collisions: Normal
PlayDepth: 0

[V4 Styles]
Format: Name, Fontname, Fontsize, PrimaryColour, SecondaryColour, TertiaryColour, BackColour, Bold, Italic, BorderStyle, Outline, Shadow, Alignment, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, AlphaLevel, Encoding
Style: Default,Verdana,26,12632256,65535,65535,-2147483640,0,0,1,2,1,2,0,0,131,0,1

Format: Marked, Start, End, Style, Name, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Effect, Text
Dialogue: Marked=0,0:00:00.00,0:00:01.50,*Default,NTP,0000,0000,0000,,ffff

by Makkeda at 19-30-12 20:30
could you modify it?

by at 19-30-12 20:55
@Makkeda: And why do you think the SSA default format should be modified?

by at 19-31-12 09:54
SE 3.5.12 will be out soon :)
Please do give latest beta (portable version) a test run.
